What to Do When You Are Under-Qualified For a Job
What to Do When You Are Under-Qualified For a JobWhat to Do When You Are Under-Qualified For a JobThe job search is a daunting process and it gets even more stressful when you feel your qualifications do not match the jobs you want. But there are many ways to get around this problem. Dont let the job you want slip through your fingers. Here are ways you can deal with the under-qualified labelDont Give Up Hope. The required qualifications portion of a job posting is more like a wish list from the employer and should in no way deter someone from applying for the position. If you are a few years shy of the required experience, but feel you can do the job, apply. The worst they can say is no. You already had a no by not applying at all.Pay Attention to Details. If you applied for the job, despite not meeting their criteria, take more time when crafting your resume and cover letter. You need to work that much harder to sell yourself properly to a vermgen employer if you feel you are under qualified for a position. Let them know why they should still take a chance on you.Show Your Interest in the Company. So many people are applying for jobs, but many are doing so without researching the companies they are applying for positions within. In an interview, you can guarantee that they will ask you about your knowledge of the company. Set yourself apart from others by demonstrating that you took the time to learn about the company and explain how you would be the right fit for their team. It shows that much more how interested you are in the position.Sell Yourself. Only you know how hard you worked at your previous jobs. Make aya you touch on these traits in an interview. Whether you worked later hours, took on other responsibilities within the company make sure you highlight the positive traits from previous jobs. Work ethic is important. A company is more willing to take a risk on someone who has shown evidence that they can learn quickly and go above and beyond to mee t the demands of their employers. Companies also like someone they can mold into a model employee. If you show examples of being that type of partie, they might hire someone with your raw talent.Dig Deep. Experience is not necessarily what you picked up from previous employment. Highlight your schooling and your unpaid experience, whether it is from internships or volunteer work. You may not realize that you do, in fact, have the experience they are looking for. You just need to dig a little deeper to find it.Get More Experience. Maybe you dont fit right now. You might have to give up that job in the immediate, but that doesnt mean you cant get that job or one like it in the future. Internships and training courses can help increase your experience level. You can also apply for a job more suited to your experience. If you get hired, go into the new job with a mission. Soak up as much as you can and do your best to learn the skills that will take you to the next level.Work For Free. Offer to work on an unpaid trial basis that is within your realm of possibility. If you dont have a job now and can go another three months without one, then this might be in the realm of possibility. Dont give up on your job search, just in case this trial plan doesnt end up working in your favor, but make the most of any possibility that allows you to show off your strengths and become just the right person they were looking to fill the position.Jon Minners, Vault.com

How Remote Workers Can Get a Promotion - The Muse
How Remote Workers Can Get a Promotion - The MuseHow Remote Workers Can Get a PromotionEver heard the saying Do things, tell people? Its sage advice for any employee, but its even more important when youre on a remote team, and andrang the risk of being out of sight and out of mind. Sure, some people assume thats a benefit of working from home (e.g., How would your boss know if you took a two-hour lunch?) But theres a flipside to that coin When youre exceeding expectations and there are no casual stops by your boss desk to fill her in on all youre doing- how will she ever know?If you want the same raises, gold stars, or promotions youd receive if you worked in an office, youve gotta make some noise. And you have to do it without being all socially-awkward-penguin about it. Try these four strategies1. Build Your NetworkYou want everyone possible to know you and the value you bring, so that when new opportunities show up, you come to mind. For this to happen, you need to build relation ships within your team. No matter how small the group is or how far-flung the zip codes are, your colleagues are part of your network. Here are two easy ways to get this relationship-building going.Swap PraisePretty obvious, right? Right. But its a surefire way to connect with the people youre working with. Skip the slimy flattery or half-hearted kudos here Im talking about expressing gratitude and calling it like you binnensee it. When someone else saves the day, helps you out big time, or goes above and beyond, make some noise. Shootum a thank-you badge on Slack Let your new boss know. Mention it during your next conference call. People dont forget this kind of thing, especially when its done publicly. The next time they spot you dishing out some awesome, theyll reciprocate. Theres nothing like having someone else make noise for youSeek Out a MentorFind a mentor. Acting on feedback is crucial to getting better at your job and earning recognition. With the help of a mentor, the get ting better part explodes, and heres the best part You can still seek out a mentor-mentee dynamic when you work remotely. You probably wont find the same structured arrangements you world in an office. Weekly coffee dates will be harder to come by, no question but this relationship is less about form and more about content. As long as youre connecting with someone you admire who can give you clear advice, youre golden.Ideally, choose someone who can introduce you to others within the company and your industry. Most importantly, select a rolle who has the skills youd like to master, because you can learn from his experience. Which brings me to me next point2. Acquire New Skills and Ask for More ResponsibilityIts great when your manager looks for opportunities for you to grow, but truth talk Your professional development is no ones responsibility but yours. Now, dont get me wrong. Internal workshops, seminars, and just plain gaining skills on the fly are terrific- if you want to move ah ead at the same rate as everyone else on your team. But Id bet that you want to stand out. Apply the extra hour or two you save by not commuting every day to some outside training. There are a million ways to up your game. Some of my personal favorite learning platforms include edX, lynda.com, and Coursera. From there, seek out avenues where you can apply your new skills. Asking for more, new, or different responsibilities increases your value within an organization. It also puts a spotlight on your growing capabilities. If there arent new and exciting opportunities floating around your team, volunteer to help other departments. Yes, this can be harder when Steve from marketing and Tara from engineering dont stand around the same water cooler, so youll have to find out yourself. Ask your boss is there are company-wide or cross-team projects. If theres no room for you to contribute that way, ask about big picture strategic goals and study the needs and challenges of the company to see if you can spot a neglected area. Create your own opportunity by pitching a new project or position that you could take on to address the weak spot.3. Track Your ProgressConsider this your new Friday ritual. Take a few minutes to jot down an outline of everything youve accomplished that week. Include all of the items that you feel great about. This record- I call it my Lookit Me file- serves a few important purposes. Long term, when its time to update your resume, youll have a treasure trove of accomplishments and metrics to pull from. Future you will be grateful, I promiseMore immediately, this practice reinforces not only your personal awareness of how things are going, but also the awareness of your boss. On particularly good weeks, fire off your Lookit Me summary to your boss, explaining what you feel great about and the things youre excited about in the week to come. Theyre perfect for when youve really been on fire. Maybe you closed a hefty new account, implemented a new syste m or tool that quickly showed positive results, or delivered a project early, not to mention one that wowd a client- I think you get the picture. Its fine to toot your own horn, as long as its not too often or loud.4. Ask for What You WantYouve networked, paired yourself with a mentor, and trained up. Youve also flaunted your skills (and the value they create). Its time for the big ask- though actually, at this point its not so big. You did most of the work already Still You have to make some noise. Again. The first step in asking for what you want is finding the right time to do it. Since youre remote, you may have to be twice as proactive in initiating the discussion. Be sure to ask your manager to set a time to talk- over video if at all possible. (You do not want to ask for a promotion over email.)Besides setting aside a dedicated time to chat, make sure you know exactly what youre asking for. If its a raise, whats the dollar amount? If its a promotion, what are the specific dutie s youre ready to tackle? In an office setting, a small presentation covering your recent milestones might be appropriate, but in a remote dynamic, a formal pitch will likely weigh the conversation down. Everything moves fast in a virtual setting, so keep it simple. Your best bet is to have a brief (updated) resume to send over in case youre asked for one, and a brag sheet on hand to look at so you can rattle off examples of your work.Working remotely comes with lots of independence, but that shouldnt stop you from proving your worth. Network, get a mentor, build your skills, look for new challenges, and track your progress. Make noise for yourself, do it with style, and youll find the recognition and advancement youre looking for.Photo of remote worker courtesy of Shutterstock.

This Is What a Successful Sales Career Looks Like - The Muse
This Is What a Successful Sales Career Looks Like - The MuseThis Is What a Successful Sales Career Looks Like There was a point in time when Tim Dearborn, The Muses West Coast Sales Manager, traveled more than he was home. Dearborn has worked for such reputable companies as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Hearst (of which, he says the people who work at those companies are amongst the best around). But, it was at Hearst that Dearborn realized that he couldnt keep traveling the way he had been since 2013.You see, the rigorous travel schedule posed a problem It stopped him from spending as much time with his young son as he wanted to. Because he shares custody of his son with his ex-wife, every weekend truly counts- and he didnt want to sacrifice their time together so he could run to the airport to make a flight. This decision to prioritize his child over his job is what ultimately landed him at The Muse. While he still cares very much about his career, he chose to find a role that allowed hi m to both be an amazing father and an influential sales leader. To learn more about what Dearborn does and, more importantly, why, keep reading. How Did You End Up at The Muse?It was a no-brainer. I sent the head of sales an InMail on LinkedIn, and he got back to me right away. Having worked in this space for close to 10 years, I was excited to join a team that was still very much in the building stages. Knowing were in a distributionspolitik here where we can build something great motivates me. If There Was One Thing You Wish People Understood About Working in Sales, What Would it Be?You need to be able to hear the prospect youre meeting with, not just listen. People, especially those in sales, are often thinking about what to say or ask next when someone is speaking with them, especially on an initial call. The good sales people are the ones who speak less than 50% of the time. The best are the ones that speak less than 30%.My favorite way to explain this is from the movie White M en Cant Jump, when Sidney Deans speaking to Billy Hoyle about hearing the music of Jimi Hendrix, You can listen to Jimi, but you cant hear him. Theres a difference man. Just because youre listening to him doesnt mean youre hearing him. The same applies to sales Just because youre listening to someone doesnt mean youre hearing them. What Motivates You to Keep Going Each Day?Everything I do is for my son. Every single thing. My family and I moved homes a lot since I was a kid, and Ive always known I didnt want to hop homes as an adult. I wanted stability. My goal is to maintain a lifestyle for my son that feels stable and secure, and while people say home is where the heart is, which it is, I also know that having to move so many times has motivated me to do things differently for my son. Also, I always want to learn and get better- and I love a good challenge. I care about the people I work with, and I want to push them to be the best version of themselves. I want that in return as w ell. Years ago, at LinkedIn, we had this saying Good job doing your job, which basically meant that if you hit your target thats good, but I expected you to do that. What else can you do?How Do You absprache With a Particularly Stressful Day at Work?I reflect a lot on life and that helps balance stress. When I was a teenager, my older siblings and I took care of my mother when she was battling cancer. After she passed away when I was 16 I didnt think about the future and the lessons she taught me in those moments of taking care of her.I just thought about making her smile. Now when Im challenged with something stressful, I remind myself that my mom was suffering greatly, yet she was still able to be my mom and teach me about life, whether it was with her words or her actions. Having gone through that puts everything else into perspective, so when a truly stressful moment is happening, I remind myself that its just time, and a moment that will pass. Along the way, Ive had some excellent mentors, bosses, and coworkers who have helped me see myself and my skills the way they do.Q What advice do you have for women in your position? A Youll encounter people along the way who will try to tell you what you can and cannot do, but dont give up. Work hard and show them what you know you can do.Q Do you have any mantras that you live by? A notlage really any mantras, but I always try to balance working hard and taking time to relax. One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of op en stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supe rvisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

Study Millennials becoming less accepting of LGBTQ people
Study Millennials becoming less accepting of LGBTQ peopleStudy Millennials becoming less accepting of LGBTQ peopleThose appreciative of Pride Month, a month in theory dedicated to the celebration and awareness of members of the LGBTQ community, often rightfully express a certain frustration at the expectation for said members to be satisfied with what ultimately amounts to baby steps. Ladders recently reported on a study from just a few months ago that revealed a significant portion of Americans do not believe a non-heterosexual couple can successfully raise a child together. An alarming finding published in the Accelerating Acceptance Report found young Americans to be less comfortable with LGBTQ members than they have been in prior years. The number of adults between the ages of 18 and 36 that would be OK with a family member coming out has gone down 7% in just a year. Thirty-four percent of this same demographic said that they would be uncomfortable being treated by an LGBTQ doctor , compared to the 27% that said this back in 2018.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraThis newness they are experiencing could be leading to this erosion. Its a newness that takes time for people to understand, says the president and CEO of GLAAD, Sarah Kate Ellis in response to the new study. Our job is to educate about nonconformity. But remember when Katie Perry wore a rainbow hat or whatever, that was pretty neat.Awareness appears to be the fairest obtainable outlay for the commercialization of this these efforts and concerns. Friends of mine that belong to the LGBTQ community were admittedly halved about the video for Taylor Swifts latest hit You Need To Calm Down, a perfect example of the kind of virtue signaling, culture commercial that reliably gets marginalized fired up, but even the most irritated among these remarked the intention favorably. Of course, action matters muc h mora than intention does. The promising omensTake a new report from Burning Glass Technologies, for instance, noting the accelerated increase in the number of job postings that include terms like gender identity, and sexual orientation. As you can see by the chart above, more and more employers are making an effort to ensure applicants are aware of their willingness to embrace diversity of all kinds in the workplace. Back in 2013, only 21% of recruiters employed equal opportunity language for their listings. This figure has risen more than 10% in five years. The authors of BurningGLass cautions us against missing the forest for the trees.Job posting data can only be suggestive as noted, not all employers are covered by the law and those that are covered arent always required to include an equal opportunity statement. The actual language can vary widely, depending on the companys culture and goals. Plus, even with a strong EOE statement, discrimination can be unconsciously built into a hiring process.Even still, if any real progress is to be made, the first steps will invariably by co-authored by awareness and inclusion.

3 Unmistakable Signs Its Time to Find A New Job
3 Unmistakable Signs Its Time to Find A New Job3 Unmistakable Signs Its Time to Find A New Job3 Unmistakable Signs Its Time to Find A New JobAre you at the end of your current job rope?Everyone gets restless at work from time to time. Whether youre in your dream job or working at a job you stumbled into, its not uncommon to hit a rut. But how do you distinguish a little restlessness from a surefire sign that its time to change careers?People tend to panic when they realize theyre dissatisfied at work. They assume theyre in the wrong field or theyve gone as far as they can in their current positions. Sometimes those instincts are right. There is such a thing as a right time to move on.Thats not always the case, however. Before you start planning your exit strategy, lets look at common signs that youve reached the end of the road and how they can be deceiving. Well also talk about how to strategize appropriately when these indicators really do mean its time for a change. Here are some telling signs it may be time for a new job1. You dread Monday mornings.Never zulauf from something always run to something. Getting a knot in your stomach every time Monday rolls around is not fun or healthy. But the knot will reemerge if you dont understand whats causing it, even if you land a new position. Many people quit their jobs because theyre unhappy with a certain aspect of it. Once theyve handed in their pink slip and said their goodbyes, some realize how good they had it and regret leaving. If Monday mornings get you down, make a list of pros and cons. What do you like about this company? Is it the values? Your co-workers? The benefits or professional development opportunities? Then, catalog the negatives. You may be surprised at how much you like your job, with the exception of the one area thats causing you dissatisfaction. Thats useful, actionable information. Youve identified the problem, so now you can talk with your boss or colleagues about fixing it.But if the list makes it clearer than ever that this job is no longer a fit, you should start looking for new opportunities. Dont disengage during this process, though. Make good on your responsibilities before you leave and offer support to your boss and co-workers. Its important to maintain good working relationships throughout the transitionbecause quality work and a positive attitude can open up untold future opportunities.2. Youve outgrown your environment. The book Love Your Workshares the story of Todd Williams, whose life is a study in second and third acts, and hes a role model for anyone considering a pivot in their careers. Todd was a world-class runner who shifted to the business side of athletics after retiring from the sport. He faced multiple setbacks due to company restructuring, but he maintained a positive attitude and took advantage of opportunities to better himself. While traveling the country as a Running Tech Rep for Adidas, Todd became involved in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. His grow ing interest in martial arts ultimately led him to start his own safety and self-defense company. He now works with clients and students throughout the U.S.We play different roles during different seasons of our lives. Todds love of sports never left him it simply led to new paths. Feeling restless in your work doesnt necessarily mean you need to leave your field. But you may need a new environment in which to thrive. When this happens, try re-vectoring. Take stock of your current circumstances. Which aspects of your work inspire you? What excites you about getting out of bed in the morning? Consider how you can cultivate the next phase of your career around those passions.3. You dont love the mission.Routine can blind us to the value of our contributions, so reflecting on why you chose your career path in the first distribution policy may renew your sense of purpose. Are you really disenchanted with the mission, or do you simply feel disconnected from it? Is there a way to get more hands-on? Perhaps you can volunteer your expertise on other teams projects to feel more engaged. Or maybe its time for a new role within the company, one that affords you a better view of the bigger picture.Love Your Workalso includes the story of a man named Daniel Headrick.Daniel turned down a prestigious law position to pursue his vocation to become a minister. Daniel and his wife had promising legal and medical careers, respectively, but when both were presented with opportunities to advance in their fields, they followed Daniels calling instead. This is an example of what I describe as repurposing. Although Daniel chose to enroll in seminary, he was able to continue practicing law. When you find yourself disengaging, consider whether its because the mission no longer resonates or because you simply need a new way to serve it.If the passion is truly gone, consult with your family, close friends, and mentors about your next move. See this crisis as an opportunity to discern what y ou really want to be doing at this stage in your life.Related 10 Tips to Choosing Your Workplace Battles WiselyDont check out on your current responsibilities.Whatever you do, dont ignore your current responsibilities while pursuing a new job. Not only does this hurt your professional relationships, but its also a missed opportunity. Use this time to learn whatever you can from your present circumstances. You dont want to look back on this job and think, What if? Make your time there count so you can move on without regrets. Is it time to change jobs? How to Answer the Tell Me About Yurself Interview Question - JobscanHow to Answer the Tell Me About Yourself Interview Question - JobscanThere isnt much you can feel certain about when you go to a job interview. Yet, there is at least one thing you know for sure you will be asked the tell me about yourself interview question at some point in the beginning of the conversation. Most of us are terrified by this question. How do I start? What are the things I should or should leid say? Do I stick to the facts from my resume? Should I start with my education or experience? These are just a few of the many questions roaming in our heads each time we have to face the tell-me-about-yourself awkwardness. What the interviewer wants to hearTrust me, no one wants to listen to a long autobiography starting with how you finished high school. What tell me about yourself really means is sell yourself.Related How to write your elevator pitchYou dont need to wait until you get asked why should we hire y ou? or what makes you a great fit for the role? It is the main reason why youre having the interview in the first place. Telling them about yourself is your ultimate chance to convince them you got their phone call for the right reasons. The core of your answer isnt actually yourselfEven though the question is technically focused on yourself, is it really what the interviewer is asking about?Lets think about it. As you probably already know from personal experience, you have greater chances of getting someone to like you if you put them first and start a conversation with what matters to them, not just you. How is a job interview any different? If you want to hit a home run with your tell me about yourself answer, you have to put the needs of the interviewer first and build your pitch around it. The employers business needs will always be the top priority on their list, which makes it your top priority, too.Their business needs are what determine which pieces of your profile and histo ry are relevant for the interviewer, and which arent. If your years of experience working with a specific software dont make you great at the job in question, its not worth spending time talking about that part of your work history.Focus on what sets you apartImagine a hundred people applying for the same job as you. All of them meet the job requirements listed in the posting and are really good at what they do. And then theres you. What sets you apart from those hundred candidates? What gives you an edge? Those would be the things that define you in the eyes of someone who is meeting you for the first time.It cannot simply be the hard skills and qualifications listed in the job requirements, because the other applicants have them too. Maybe its what drives you to go above and beyond to do your job. Maybe its your experience in a closely related industry allowing you to have a much deeper understanding of the target market. Maybe its your unique ability to visualize the big picture a nd understand how to move different smaller parts to make the entire mechanism work more smoothly. Each one of us has something unique to offer. If you have no clue how to look for what sets you apart, ask someone who has worked with you your leaders, colleagues or clients. How would they describe you? What do they remember you for? Thats a great place to start.Whats in it for them?Remember how we mentioned that the employers business needs are at the top of the interviewers list of priorities? This is exactly why it is important for you to connect the unique attributes you bring to the table with what they are looking to accomplish if they hire you.Think of yourself as an investment. If the employer sitting across the table from you decides to invest in you, what results can they expect?RelatedHow to answer What are your salary expectations? This is what people commonly refer to as value proposition. It is your job to relate your key selling points to the value you can add to their b usiness and you need to do it right away in your tell me about yourself pitch if you really want to capture their interest.Use your own voiceImagine your interviewer sitting all day listening to candidates saying, Im a result-oriented XYZ professional with X number of years Get the picture? The interviewer is there to have a human conversation and get to know who you are in real life. Its a pretty tricky task on its own, considering a couple of relatively short interviews is all they have to do that. Stiff, robotic resume lingo doesnt make it any easier for them to like you and understand what you have to offer.Avoid using clich expressions or sounding like youre simply reading your resume out loud. Instead, tell your interviewer what makes you the best fit for their company. A job interview is, first and foremost, a conversation with an objective to get to know one another better.Examples How to answer Tell me about yourselfI have more than six years of experience in full cycle acc ounting.
